We are striving for the development of the next generation products at the “Medical Systems Development Center” established in cooperation with the Research & Development Group of Hitachi, Ltd. in April, 2008 making the best use of the leading-edge technologies and knowhow that Hitachi Group possesses. As the results, 1.2-Tesla super-conductive magnet Open MRI system “OASIS” and digital diagnostic ultrasound system “HI VISION Preirus” were put into market.

What are the measures for strengthening the overseas sales system?

We are striving for the sales expansion through local sales companies in North America, Europe and Asian territory with China in its center. In August, 2009, we constructed a new manufacturing building inside the factory located in Suzhou, China and started manufacturing in China of the permanent magnet Open MRI systems. It has enabled production of MRI systems in China, the country of origin of the permanent magnet, for us to reduce production cost, and furthermore, it becomes possible to provide constantly permanent magnet Open MRI systems to such new markets worldwide mainly as Asia, Mid-east, Africa and South America where increasing demands are expected from now and on.

In addition, regarding new markets other than North America, Europe and Asia, we are structuring sales networks consisting of commercial firms and distributors for increasing sales. In September, 2009, we opened the Mid-east office in Cairo, Egypt to strengthen the sales system toward Mid-east and Africa.

What are the measures for strengthening corporate constitution?

We are now striving for various measures including decreased lead times, reduced inventory, improved product quality, improved service quality and progress of ecological measures for strengthening the corporate constitution.

Also, in ecological areas, our efforts address green procurement movements and expansion of ecologically conformed products.

What are the strong points of Hitachi Medical Corporation?

The systems friendly not only to patients but also to operators such as Open MRI systems suited to the examination of children and the aged who hate narrow places and also Offset Open type Multipurpose Imaging System CUREVISTA are developed. In addition, we are striving for the development of the next generation products at the “Medical Systems Development Center” started up together with such operations as the research and development division of Hitachi, Ltd. in April, 2008 making the best use of the leading-edge technologies and knowhow that Hitachi Group possesses.

What is the sales amount classified by market and sales area?

The ratio of sales amount between domestic market and overseas market is approx. 6 : 4. Among the overseas sales, those of North America and Europe occupy 40% each. In North America, the main sales item is MRI, and in Europe ultrasound systems.

Along with the sales strategy in consideration of the market needs of each area, we are trying to expand the scope of handled products and to promote the mixed multimodality* sales.

* “Modality” means a product group of various diagnostic imaging systems such as X-ray systems, X-ray CT systems, MRI systems and ultrasound systems.

How does the company proceed business in cooperation with Hitachi, Ltd. and Hitachi Group companies?

Medical business is one of the social innovation business areas in which Hitachi Group is now concentrating its power particularly. We are striving for the development of the next generation products at the “Medical Systems Development Center” making the best use of the leading-edge technologies and knowhow that Hitachi Group possesses.

What are the diagnostic imaging systems?

They are the equipment which makes images of the inside of the human body which cannot be visualized normally. The inside of the human body can be seen with tomographic images or 3D images without giving harm to the human body. Major diagnostic imaging systems are X-ray (Roentgen) system, X-ray CT system, MRI system, Diagnostic ultrasound system and Nuclear medicine system.

Diagnostic imaging systems include X-ray system, X-ray CT system, MRI system, Diagnostic ultrasound system and so on. What are the principle and features of each product?

·X-ray system
It is also called “Roentgen system”. It is a system to output and display on a film or TV screen the intensity of the X-ray beam that has passed through the human body as shades. There are various types in accordance with the purpose of diagnosis and treatment, and major systems are a radiography and fluoroscopy system, radiographic and fluoroscopic system for vascular examination, imaging system for surgical use, mammography system, health screening system, mobile X-ray unit, general radiographic system and X-ray system for dental use.

·X-ray CT system
CT is an abbreviation of “Computed Tomography” and it is a system with which the X-ray source and sensor rotate around the examinee and images are reconstructed using raw data that show the degree of absorption by human body in each direction for X-ray beams irradiated from 360° angles around it with a computer. Human body can be seen as axially sectioned images.
The mainstream of the latest CT is the multi-slice type which is able to provide plural images by a single rotation.

·MRI system
MRI is an abbreviation of “Magnetic Resonance Imaging” and it is a system which makes images of information inside the body utilizing the nuclear magnetic resonance phenomenon of hydrogen molecules inside the body.
MRI systems are classified to a superconducting magnet type and permanent magnet type. The superconducting type can generate higher magnetic field than that by the permanent magnet type while it can be operated with lower running cost and lower noise and is accepted widely by small and middle size hospitals. MRI systems are classified also to a closed (tunnel) type and open type. Present systems are bipolarized to a closed type with the superconducting magnet and an open type with the permanent magnet.

·Diagnostic ultrasound system
It is a system which makes images of the inside of the body as tomographic images by producing ultrasound waves and receiving those reflected at the boundary of the living body tissue.

·Nuclear medicine system
It is a system which detects emitted Gamma rays and makes images after administration of a radiopharmaceutical that contains radioisotopes.
By measuring emitted gamma rays with a gamma camera or PET, circulation inside organs, metabolic information, existence of tumors, neurotransmitter substance, distribution of neural receptors, etc. can be examined. X-ray CT system and MRI system examine the shape, position and size of organs while the nuclear medicine system is mainly used to examine the working status (function) of organs.

Development of diagnostic imaging systems

What is the difference between the X-ray CT system and MRI system?

The X-ray CT system and MRI system have main features as shown below:

What is the advantage of Open MRI?

Major features are as shown below:

①  The open MRI allows examinations in a widely opened environment, and so consideration is paid for accepting patients who dislike a narrow place ,children and the aged who dislike the MRI examination.
② Compact installation area allows space saving.
③Stable operation is possible without necessity of precious periodic replacement parts and consumables.
④Utilizing the magnetic field of permanent magnet realizes power saving as power consumption is small. Power consumption of the total system is 4kW, approx.1/3 of that of the super-conductive magnet MRI system (compared with ECHELON Vega, Hitachi super-conductive magnet system, year 2006 model).

What is Japanese market size of diagnostic imaging systems?

Japanese market size was approx. 250 billion Yen as of 1999, but it has grown up to approx. 370 billion Yen in 2006. However, it was approx. 330 billion Yen as of 2008, somewhat influenced by the cutback of medical treatment remuneration. (Quoted from “Diagnostic Imaging Systems Industry” by the Japan Industries Association of Radiological Systems)

How many years approximately is the replacement cycle of diagnostic imaging systems?

Approx. 10 years in average although it differs in accordance with individual products. (Quoted from “Investigations on the state of introduction of diagnostic imaging systems and the state of securing safety” by the Japan Industry Association of Medical Imaging Systems).
